About the Area:
Historically a part of Surrey, Battersea is on the south bank of the River Thames. Roughly triangular in shape, its northern boundary is the Thames as it runs first north-east, and then east, before turning north again to pass Westminster. To the east of Battersea is Lambeth; on the south are Camberwell, Streatham, and Clapham; on the west, Wandsworth.
The area of Battersea is often confused with Clapham – something that residents of the area feel strongly about, resulting in the launch in 2007 of the SW11-tch campaign, urging local businesses and residents to ‘switch’ back to Battersea.
The London Borough of Wandsworth is the greenest of all London’s boroughs and Battersea’s famous 200 acre park features a small children’s zoo, a boating lake, a bandstand, and several all-weather outdoor sporting facilities including tennis courts, a running track and football pitches. In 2002-4, Battersea Park underwent an £11m refurbishment funded in part by the Heritage Lottery Fund, making it one of the most enjoyable open green spaces in the borough.
Battersea, as an area that has also undergone massive regeneration and development over the last 40 years or so. It has a variety of different types of property ranging from Victorian terraces, to fashionable conversions of Victorian schools and factories and modern apartment blocks with all manner of facilities such as gyms and 24 hour concierge services.
The River Thames is the prime area for these modern, young executive apartments with one of the most famous of these being the Albion Riverside Building on Hester Road. Designed by Foster and Partners, it offers slightly more than the typical riverside apartment, providing not only the gym, concierge and swimming pool, but also shops, a restaurant and even its own art gallery.
Transport:
Despite what the name may suggest, Battersea SW11 is home to Clapham Junction station the UK’s busiest railway station with trains to Waterloo (in 7 minutes) and Victoria (in 6 minutes). Other Battersea stations are Queens Town Road and Battersea Park.
