The George

Tucked away from Borough High Street in a cobbled courtyard, The George is a cracking pub that offers a unique venue steeped in history.  Established in medieval times, The George was rebuilt in 1676 after a serious fire destroyed much of Southwark and went on to become one of the Capital’s many famous coaching inns.

The pub became a local haunt for Charles Dickens who was said to frequent the coffee room and also for William Shakespeare with his playhouse, the Globe Theatre, a stone’s throw away on Bankside.

Today the pub is owned by the National Trust and has survived the years amazingly intact with lattice windows and oak beams and a wonderful galleried dining room that was once the bedchambers. The George serves up a fantastic Sunday roast, a good range ales and plenty of bustle in one of London’s greatest treasures!
