Built between 1805 and 1906, as the training site for officers of the Royal Artillery and the Royal Engineers, The Royal Academy consists of a number of outstanding Grade II* and Grade II listed buildings and structures.  Key to the sites design are the open spaces between the buildings which, transformed from the old quadrangles and parade grounds, will become attractive squares and gardens in this spacious conservation landscape.

Located just minutes from the managed meadows and wildlife sanctuary of Woolwich Common, The Academy offers acres of green open spaces at your fingertips. It is on the South London Green Chain Walk; a 40 mile network of intricate footpaths running through beautiful open spaces and woodlands, and is also on the London Cycle Network and London Marathon route - providing the perfect opportunity for a gentle stroll or perhaps more strenuous exercise!

The Academy is served by its own bus route with frequent, quick services to the centre of Woolwich. The Docklands Light Railway runs from Woolwich Arsenal to City Airport in just 6 minutes and to Canary Wharf in under 20 minutes. National Rail services run direct from here to London Bridge (20 minutes) and Charing Cross (35 minutes).  Royal Arsenal even has its own pier for the Thames Clipper river boat service to the O2 (8 minutes), Canary Wharf (30 minutes) and London Bridge (40 minutes).

Information on SE18
Since the redevelopment of the former Royal Arsenal site began, Woolwich has enjoyed a renaissance. Several High Street chains previously absent from Woolwich have opened branches, and longer-established shops have been refurbished.

Planning for further development around the “Woolwich Triangle” area at the other end of town is in the early stages.  Some redevelopment has also begun at the Riverside end of Woolwich with the demolition of the derelict Crown and Cushion pub next to the Waterfront leisure centre, and the rapidly-progressing development of a residential apartments on the site of the old Union Tavern, next to Riverside House.

The 2012 London Olympic Games will feature Woolwich as a venue for shooting events, and building work has already begun in the barracks for creating the venue.

SE18 is the place to visit for military history.  Firepower, Royal Artillery Museum can be found in Royal Arsenal and tells the history and development of artillery.

The Thames Barrier, the largest moveable flood barrier in the world, is on Unity Way in SE18 and the visitor centre offers fantastic views of the barrier.

Waterfront Leisure Centre on High Road has a good range of facilities, including a water park with a slide and wave machine.  There are also a number of sports played in the centre and crèche facilities and classes available.

Next to the River Thames, Woolwich Common is an open green space which allows locals and visitors to get away from hectic city life and the Woolwich Thames Path, just off Woolwich High Street, provides a pleasant waterfront walk with great views.

To the South East of Woolwich lies Plumstead, and Shooters Hill beyond.
