Whether you favour large and convenient or small and personal for your food purchases, Kennington offers plenty of options. Nearby, theres a Sainsburys supermarket on Wandsworth Road and a Tesco on Kennington Lane as well as numerous quality independent stores within a few hundred meters - including patisseries, traditional English butchers, a fishmonger and delicatessens. And if youre a cricket fan, the Brit Oval, home of Surrey Cricket dating back to 1845, is just 700m away.
Kennington London Underground station (Zone 2) is a short 600m walk with tube services on the Northern Line to Waterloo, Central London and through to Euston and Kings Cross to the north. Vauxhall station is 1km away and as well as London Underground tube services (on the Victoria line), benefits from fast mainline rail services (direct to Waterloo in 4 minutes). Oxford Circus can be reached in just 8 minutes via the Victoria line from Vauxhall by tube. Elephant & Castle is also nearby with Underground services on the Northern and Bakerloo lines. Kennington is also well served by buses with 10 routes in close proximity to this property.
SE11 is surprisingly full of diverse things to do. It includes the Imperial War Museum and the UK's largest cricket ground, The Oval. SE11 has also seen a great deal of regeneration activity in recent years and the redevelopment of the area is not finished yet with several large residential and infrastucture projects currently underway.
The modern street pattern of Kennington was formed by the early nineteenth century; the village had become a semi-rural suburb with grand terraced houses.
The Oval cricket ground was leased to Surrey County Cricket Club from the Duchy of Cornwall in 1845, and the adjacent gasometers (themselves an international sporting landmark) were constructed in 1853.
In recent years, Kennington has experienced gentrification, driven by the advantages of its location and good transport links to the West End and the City of London.
