The area of the former Royal Vitoria Docks and Canning Town has steadily been transformed since the 1970s by the construction of the Thames Barrier, an adjacent park and development of new housing. In the south of E16 at Royal Victoria Docks, on the River Thames, the dock itself still exists and is accessible to ships, although it is now primarily used for water sports. Most of the original warehouses on the waterfront have been demolished but the historic 19th century K-S and W Warehouses - both now listed buildings - have been preserved.

The dock area is dominated by the ExCeL Exhibition Centre, built on the north quayside and opened in November 2000.  It hosts the annual London Boat Show, with visiting vessels moored alongside the waterfront exhibition centre.

There has been some private development in the area, particularly exclusive riverside developments of luxury apartments.  One such example is the award winning Britannia Village development to the south side of Royal Victoria Docks.

There are a number of green spaces in E16, perfect for relaxing or playing sports and there are plenty of football pitches in the area!  Canning Town Recreation Ground is on Newham Way and as well as boasting a tennis court, a football pitch and a multi-use games court, the park also has plenty of flower beds and a children’s play area.  Keir Hardie Recreation Ground is a similar park with a football pitch, and can be found on Tarling Road.  Lyle Park on Bradfield Road also has sporting facilities, including tennis and basketball courts and a football pitch and Star Park on Star Lane is another recreation area with a football pitch!

Royal Victoria Gardens, located on Pier Road, (off Albert Road) offers a range of amenities to suit all types of visitor.  Sporting facilities include a bowling green and a tennis court and there is also a café and a paddling pool.  Cundy Road Open Space on Victoria Dock Road offers a nature area and a pond, making it an ideal place for wildlife lovers.

Also nearby is Newham City Farm, which gives Londoners the chance to experience a taste of rural life!  This farm focuses on raising rare breeds and unusual animals, such as llamas and wallabies.
