The area of the former Royal Vitoria Docks and Canning Town has steadily been transformed since the 1970s by the construction of the Thames Barrier, an adjacent park and development of new housing. In the south of E16 at Royal Victoria Docks, on the River Thames, the dock itself still exists and is accessible to ships, although it is now primarily used for water sports. Most of the original warehouses on the waterfront have been demolished but the historic 19th century K-S and W Warehouses - both now listed buildings - have been preserved.
Transport
The area’s transport links have been greatly improved in recent years with new roads and Docklands Light Railway lines running from Canning Town to King George V Dock. In fact, E16 now boasts no fewer than 13 DLR stations. The London Underground network is accessible in the west of the district via Canning Town station on the Jubilee Line, which runs through Canary Wharf and on to the West End.
Overground services can be found at Customs House – for the ExCeL exhibition centre – and Canning Town.
